Canada runs on fax more than most people expect. The Canada Revenue Agency, federal immigration offices, provincial health authorities, law firms, and real estate lawyers across Ontario, Quebec, and BC all use fax as a routine channel for formal document exchange. If you need to submit something to a Canadian government office, hospital, or court, there is a very good chance they will give you a fax number. This guide explains how Canadian fax numbers work and how to send one online from anywhere.

Canadian fax number format

Canada is part of the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) and shares country code +1 with the United States. There is no separate country code for Canada — the area code is what distinguishes a Canadian number from a US number.

Canadian fax numbers follow the same 10-digit format as US numbers: a 3-digit area code followed by a 7-digit local number.

CityArea codes
Toronto, ON416, 647, 437
Vancouver, BC604, 778, 236
Montreal, QC514, 438, 263
Ottawa, ON613, 343
Calgary, AB403, 587, 825
Edmonton, AB780, 587

When entering a Canadian number in our fax form, select +1 from the country dropdown (the same option as the US), then enter the full 10-digit number including the Canadian area code — for example, a Toronto CRA fax number would be entered as 1-800-959-8281 or in local format as 416-XXX-XXXX depending on the number published.

Who uses fax in Canada

Federal government and tax

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is one of the most fax-active federal agencies in the country. CRA accepts faxed copies of T4 and T4A slips, Notices of Objection (using form T400A), authorization requests, and a range of other tax documents. CRA publishes dedicated fax numbers by service type on canada.ca — for example, the Individual Tax Enquiries fax line and the Business Tax Enquiries fax line have distinct numbers. Always verify the fax number from the CRA website directly, as numbers differ by province and by form type.

IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) accepts fax for certain document submissions related to sponsorship applications, study permit requests, and update submissions for files already in process. While IRCC has expanded its online portal significantly, fax remains a fallback for specific correspondence types, particularly for submissions that do not fit the web form categories.

Provincial health authorities and insurance

Healthcare is the single largest driver of fax volume in Canada. Ontario Health and regional Ontario Health Teams coordinate heavily by fax between family physicians, specialists, hospitals, and labs. BC Health Authorities — including Fraser Health, Vancouver Coastal Health, and Interior Health — publish fax numbers for referrals, lab results, and patient transfers. OHIP and equivalent provincial insurance plans in Quebec (RAMQ) and Alberta (AHCIP) use fax for prior authorization requests, referral coordination, and billing dispute correspondence. It is standard practice for a GP to fax a referral to a specialist's office; many specialist offices still have no alternative intake channel.

The Federal Court of Canada and provincial superior courts accept fax filings for certain procedural matters. In Ontario, the Superior Court of Justice has historically accepted fax for emergency motions and select civil filings. Quebec's legal system — operating under civil law — has strong traditions of written correspondence, and fax is used by Tribunaux administratifs du Québec and Cour du Québec for formal submissions. Canadian law firms universally maintain fax numbers. Inter-solicitor correspondence, Notice to Admit, and discovery document exchange frequently move by fax, particularly at smaller and mid-size firms.

Real estate

Property lawyers in Ontario, BC, and Quebec are among the heaviest fax users in the country. Closing documents, title requisitions, mortgage instructions from lenders, and direction re proceeds are routinely exchanged by fax on closing day. Law Society rules in Ontario and BC permit fax as an official channel for certain document exchanges. This is especially true for transactions not yet on electronic closing platforms like Teranet. A real estate lawyer's fax line is considered as essential as their email address.
